Viktoriya Dodoka

VIKTORIYA DODOKA

(Soprano)

Russian-born soprano Viktoriya Dodoka began her musical training in her city of Krasnodar near the Black Sea, and later graduated in music and singing from the Tchaikovsky State Conservatoire in Moscow. She performed lead roles in a number of productions for Moscow Opera. Among them Susanna in The Marriage of Figaro, Violetta in La Traviata, Zerlina in Don Giovanni and Marfa in Rimsky-Korsakoff’s The Tsar’s Bride. She also sang solo soprano with the Stuttgart Bach Academy Choir in concert performances of Bach’s Magnificat, Hendel’s Nelson Mass and Mozart’s Requiem.

For five years from 1996, Viktoriya was premiere soloist with the Krasnodar Artistic Association. In 1996 she won a prestigious honor diploma at the First International Singing Competition at Moscow’s Bolshoy Theatre.

Viktoriya immigrated to New Zealand in 2001. She made her New Zealand debut soon after, singing the roles of Olympia /Antonia in Canterbury Opera’s production of The Tales of Hoffman.

“She displayed brilliant, flawless coloratura in her Doll Song, with polished, assured singing and an affecting vulnerability as Antonia.”

“Christchurch Star”, Wednesday 25th July 2001

2002 saw Viktoriya Dodoka sing the title role in Norma for Canterbury Opera; she also appeared as a soloist with the Christchurch City Choir and Christchurch Symphony Orchestra in Orff’s Carmina Burana and in The Glory of Russia with the Sydney Youth Orchestra at the Sydney Opera House.

“Casting from strength, a new arrival to Christchurch is the Russian – trained soprano Viktoriya Dodoka, who embraced the title role and projected a strong, well – focused soprano voice, which never strained or showed weariness in this demanding role and had not a trace of “wobble”. She had warmth and passion and just enough steely resolve where required…”

“Opera now”, September/October 2002 (London issue)

In 2003, Viktoriya Dodoka appeared as Violetta in Canterbury Opera’s production of La Traviata and sang the soprano solos in Verdi’s Requiem in Napier and for the Kapiti Choral Society.

“If there exists an operatic singer in this country with a better technique than Viktoriya Dodoka, then I am yet to hear her. It is like the same admiration as when listening to Dame Joan Sutherland, knowing that each note would be perfectly prepared and supported, and even more than this, with an understated yet true presentation of the feeling behind the words. She was brilliant as Norma last year, and this time is simply stunning as an intensely human Violetta.”

“The Opera Critic” by Howard Livingston 2003

In 2004, Viktoriya won First Prices in Lockwood Aria Competition in Classes Aria and 20th Century Art Song.

“Viktoriya stunned the judges and audience alike at the Rotorua Convention Centre last night, with a powerful rendition of the aria E strano! E strano! from Verdi’s opera La Traviata…

…some of the judges believed her voice to be the most powerful they had heard in Australasia…”
